The ‘Unfurl’ series is a new group of cedar sculptures I have recently made. There are four unique pieces in the series ranging from 18″ to 49″ tall, all with wonderfully weathered sandstone bases. Each piece is carved from old growth red cedar driftwood that I have salvaged from the beaches around the Salish Sea here in British Columbia.
I often find pieces on the beach that already have a certain shape, twist or curve, which helps lend itself to becoming a sculpture. These pieces all had that wider base with rounded or wide enough top for a spiral to be carved. I use a Foredom professional carving tool to refine carving that often starts with the froe to split the wood and planing blades on a grinder for roughing shapes. Each piece is sanded to a fine finish and oiled with OSMO exterior UV protection oil. These pieces are already sold, but please enquire for sales and pricing with any of my wood working.
