I was lucky to be asked to contribute a privacy screen/ cedar gates to this new bed and breakfast project. The Salmonberry Inn is located on South Pender Island and is a new luxury waterfront B & B. My part is this project was to design a privacy screen and two cedar gates that fit with the local and sustainable focus of the B&B. The owners wanted the privacy screen, which divides the lower deck between the rooms, to have a driftwood motif to reflect the beaches just below. 
I built the screen and gates all from old growth red cedar driftwood that I salvaged from local beaches, using traditional mortise and tenon joinery. For the design on the screen and gates I used more of the cedar driftwood, but left it rough and silvery as it is found on the beach. I love the contrast this creates with the smooth sanded and finished cedar which has these vibrant yellow, orange and red colours throughout the grain. When cedar is split by hand, the division follows the grain, so you will never get a completely straight piece of wood, and this is what makes working with hand split cedar very unique. Check out the wavy cedar stile 
on the house side of the screen, and naturally curved top piece. There are also multiple textures at play here, from the sanded smooth wood, to the split cedar pickets, and the rough silver driftwood. I tried to create movement as well within these pieces with the rolling driftwood lines, and pickets opening up to one side as they get smaller. I designed custom stainless steel sprung latches for this project and they turned out beautifully. Thanks to Callum McKay of Stainless By Design on Pender Island for making me these latches for this and many other projects! These latches will never rust and look great silver, but can also be easily painted any colour. These gates and screen are coated with Landark Natural Oil Finish to bring out the colours and then waterproofed with Cedar Seal, a clear polymer finish. Both of these products have the environmental safe stamp.
